Baby Benjamin was welcomed with love by his big brother, big sister, and parents. I had the honor of documenting this amazing milestone for this growing family. During my time with the Shumaker family it was evident that this little guy is going to be smothered with love by all who surround him. This year I have refocused my business on high school senior portraits and I don't photograph many newborn sessions anymore. But I had to make an exception when my dear friend asked me to photograph her sweet family. Much love to your family as you soak in these first weeks as a family of five!
During newborn portrait sessions, I find my focus shifting as I strive to create timeless, beautiful images that will still be stunning years from now. My favorite images are the genuine, unposed moments when the new parents snuggle and dote on their new baby. New babies always are happier when they are being held close by mom or dad, rather than being forced into whatever is the current, popular, newborn pose. I find myself creating the images that I would want of my own children and my own family. I love natural, candid, genuine images that not only serve to remember the fleeting newborn weeks, but that also show the real love between family members. Looking back at some of my newborn portrait sessions, I am drawn to these images that are natural and genuine. I believe that these images will stand the test of time and that over the years they will become as meaningful to the tiny subjects as they are to their parents.
I'm thrilled to share that my work has been featured in Los Angeles edition of The Bump magazine! It is such an honor to be included and so exciting to see images of the lovely families I've worked with printed in a magazine. The Bump is a wonderful resource for moms-to-be as well as new moms. Not only do they create a delightful, quarterly magazine but they also have a fabulous online presence with lots of helpful ideas, articles, and resources. If you are pregnant or a new mom, I highly recommend that you check out their website for your local area. The Bump Los Angeles can be found HERE on their website. I am so grateful for the families that have trusted and supported me along the way in my photography journey. I want to specifically thank the four families that gave their encouragement and permission to share these images in The Bump magazine. I love each one of these portrait sessions and I feel like these images truly show the style and heart of my photography.
I consider photographing newborn babies and their families a privilege. They are only tiny and new for such a short window of time and I take the responsibility of capturing those first days very seriously. As you can imagine, parents don't get to retake the photos if they don't turn out the way they had dreamed. I also enjoy documenting the new connections between the parents and newborn as they are just getting to know one another. What I love even more is getting to document a family as their babies grow. I love seeing their unique personalities begin to emerge. I love getting to document the important milestones of first gummy smiles, rolling over, sitting up, crawling, and first steps. I love watching the parents' thrilled responses to all of their baby's milestones during the first year.
This past year I had the pleasure of documenting Miss O's first year. She has a very special place in my heart since she is my niece. I have shared a few of these photos already, but I wanted to share some more images from each of her portrait sessions during her first 12 months. Thank you, M and S, for inviting me to capture some milestones from her first year. Can't wait to see your little beauty continue to grow and blossom.
Photographing precious Miss A was delightful! I truly enjoyed visiting with her mama and grandparents during her portrait session. Once Miss A is a little bit older she is going to have so much fun running around after her big brother. Seventeen months is such a busy, curious age - so I was especially pleased that we were able to grab some fun shots of her big brother. Thank you, D Family, for warmly welcoming me into your lives and for the honor of documenting Miss A's first days at home. It's clear that she is already so loved and adored!
I am thrilled with the resulting images from our time together, but I especially love the eye contact in the image below. It's a rarity to get such great eye contact from a newborn baby. Love it!
